Trembling on the street Paws cold and shaking

Shadows act as monsters Every movement, another fear

Her fur is matted

Eyes glued wide open

The alleyway as dark as a cave The wet, freezing ground

Makes her slide around like an ice rink

A series of footsteps

Echo down the road outside

People with raincoats, umbrellas While she doesn’t have a roof

Suddenly, someone appears

A person with gloves and a kind smile Instincts kick in

She sprints away, Only to be caught.

A pair of hands Descend from above

They wrap around Her shivering body Like a blanket,

But unknown

Her eyes open, Light spilling in She’s on a table

With equipment everywhere

The person looks over, Eyes still gleaming

And shows a tiny smile.

A cage,

Complete with blankets and toys, Seems to beckon to her

Finally, what may be a safe place

But no

It’s not safe

Her stay is timed

There are rules in place

As she takes a nap She doesn’t know

That if she stays too long

She won’t be around too much longer

Aren’t animal shelters Supposed to save them? Not cut their time short.

People come daily To look in the cages To gawk at them

Rarely do they decide To take one home

To save a life.

Why would you save them,

If you aren’t really saving them? So, what’s the reason?

Let them live a little more

You’re not helping them It’s all a facade

Helping then killing Isn’t the answer

So, what’s the reason?
